Community Gardens program at Viles Arboretum enters fifth season

Apr. 72017

AUGUSTA — The Viles Arboretum invites anyone who would like to participate in its Community Gardens Program to join us at an organizational and information meeting on April 13 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. The Arboretum offers a large array of garden plots for raising vegetables, herbs and flowers, and the general interest has made this one of the more popular initiatives at the Arboretum.

If you or someone you know might like to participate, come to this meeting where everything will be covered and questions answered. It’s also a perfect time to meet previous gardeners or newcomers. The meeting will be held in the Visitors Center, 153 Hospital St.

The goal is to make plots available for planting by May 15. The Arboretum has acquired a tiller for its tractor to make gardening on its own schedule easier. The following tasks need to be done by May 15, and volunteers are needed to help with the following:

* Till the garden
* Lay out plots
* Assign names to plots
* Stake and line the entire garden
* Set up water tank and hoses

This program is a great way to learn from others, trade seeds and plants and join in an activity to meet other gardeners and people from the area. The Arboretum provides watering cans, mulch, water and hoses, some implements, and of course, the tilled garden plots.

The Viles Arboretum — centrally located on 224 acres of fields, forests, wetlands and botanical collections — offers an ever-changing selection of programs for the general public and for schools. We focus on interactive, creative and hands-on teaching with a focus on natural history and unlocking everyone’s natural ability to understand the nature of our world through your own eyes and by using your own intellect.

You can learn more about the Arboretum and its programs, or how to become more involved by checking our website at www.vilesarboretum.org, checking its Facebook page or simply by stopping in or calling us at 626-7989.
