Greater Androscoggin Humane Society modifies operations

Mar. 192020

LEWISTON – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has announced modified operations to limit exposure to COVID-19.
“As we embrace social distancing to help keep our community members as healthy as possible, we feel it is in the best interest of our community to close to the public through Monday, March 30, effective immediately,” said Katie Lisnik, executive director. “Please know that our hard-working team of staff and volunteers are still here caring for our animals daily and we’re doing all we can to ensure that they stay healthy.”
It’s important to know that, to date, there have not been any cases of dogs or cats becoming sick with the new coronavirus, COVID-19. There is also no evidence of people catching the virus from companion animals. However, it’s always a good idea to wash your hands after being around animals and let another family member provide animal care if you are sick.
While the COVID-19 impact in Maine is rapidly changing, the following changes have been put into place so that GAHS can continue to serve the pets and people of our community while keeping our staff, volunteers, and clients protected:

Adoptions are needed
If you are interested in adopting an animal, the shelter will be doing adoptions by appointment. It will be ramping up social media profiles of available animals and focusing on remote matchmaking to help limit shelter foot traffic.
* Adoptable animals can be viewed at gahumane.org/adopt.
* Email info@gahumane.org or call 207-783-2311to schedule an animal adoption appointment.
Incoming Animals
* Animals in need of surrender and stray intakes will continue to be accepted. If the need to surrender a pet is not urgent, wait to bring it in for at least a few weeks to allow the shelter to ensure room for emergency cases. Email info@gahumane.org or call 207-783-2311 to schedule an intake appointment.

Fetchin’ Food Pet Pantry
Clients of the pet food pantry can still receive food from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays. there will be an outdoor setup to help folks maintain a safe distance while still accessing services.

Donations are still greatly needed
* Items can be bought on the Amazon Wish List and be delivered to the shelter.
* Those who have bought items for dropoff can put them in the donaiton bin at the front door.
* Financial gifts can be made at gahumane.org/give/general-donations.
