LIVERMORE FALLS — The Memorial Day Committee is looking for volunteers to help plan the events for this year’s ceremony and parade. When the committee met in March, it voted to allow the purchase of needed grave flags and flag holders, and letters have been sent to the towns of Livermore, Livermore Falls, Jay and Fayette to request money to help pay for them. They’ll be purchased through American Legion Post 10 to save money, according to a news release from the committee.
The release noted only five people attended the march meeting, when in the past as many as 20 or 30 would help with Memorial Day planning. “We need more volunteers to help plan the parade, as this is one of the few Memorial Day parades that are still running,” the release said. “The communities of Jay, Livermore, Fayette and Livermore Falls have had these parades and gatherings since the Grand Army of the Republic after the end of the Civil War in 1868. We need volunteers to continue these very important traditions.”
The next meeting is 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 1, at American Legion Post 10, 17 Reynolds Ave. The committee also voted that this year’s theme will be “Those We Have Lost.”
Convertibles are needed to carry the parade marshal and others during the parade, and anyone who has one that can be used is asked to call Don Simoneau or Diane Getz.
The committee is also looking for a couple of trailers to carry veterans and auxiliary members in the parade. Hillside Sports in Jay has sent the committee a check, and AmVets Post 33 in Jay has committed to cover the parade insurance for this year’s parade.
