Smithfield, Maine’s only leap year town, plans four days of events

SMITHFIELD — Maine’s only leap year town is celebrating its annversary from Feb. 26 through Feb. 29. Smithfield was incorporated on Feb. 29, 1840, the only town in Maine incorporated on Feb. 29, in a leap year. The town started organizing leap year celebrations in 2016. The schedule includes: Wednesday, Feb. 26 – Family Movie Night, 6 p.m., Fairview Grange 342, in the village. Hot Dogs, popcorn, drinks and snacks will be available. Thursday, Feb. 27 — Murder Mystery Dinner, 6 p.m. at the Fairview Grange, $25 a person, BYOB. Tickets are available at the town office.

Friday,Feb. 28 — The Leap Year Tonight Show featuring local entertainment — musicians, dancers, comedians surprise guests, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fairview Grange 342, in the village.
Saturday, Feb. 29:
Vintage Snowmobile Show & Swap, 9 a.m. registration, at Tri-Pond Variety, corner of Route 137 and Route 8. Raffles, evening trail ride and much more. Saturday, Feb. 29, all-day events at the municipal complext, 926 Village Road, include: Grab a hot lunch at the firehouse served up by Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department. Donations accepted, noon to 2 p.m.
Free hot chocolate bar open all day in the firehouse, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Smithfield Historical Society powerpoint presentation with postcards and photos from 1860 to today, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Red Cross and SCART Team, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Affordable pet clinic, Jordan Farm Livestock Rescue, 9 a.m. to noon, with free photos of your pets.
Snow sculpture contest — make it a family event or grab your friends — preregister at town office. Contest begins 9 a.m., prizes awarded 2 p.m. Supplies provided.
Toboggan races — get your team ready — 1 to 3 p.m. Preregister in the town office. Prizes awarded at 3:15 p.m.
Banners and fliers with more information will be posted in and around Smithfield, so be on the lookout. The celebration is sponsored by many local businesses, and unless otherwise stated, events are free. Donations are accepted and will go toward the Summer Leap Year Celebration Events in August.
