Free outdoor snowshoe events set for Skowhegan

SWOWHEGAN — Main Street Skowhegan is sponsoring several free outdoor recreation activities this month.
Saturday, Jan. 11 — Snowshoe Scavenger Hunt, 10-11:30 a.m., at Debe River Walk (meet at walking bridge behind M. Thai Restaurant). The scavenger hunt will be along the Debe River Walk and the Philbrick Trails. The event is good for the whole family, and dogs are welcome, as long as their person brings a poop bag. Bring water, as well as showshoes.
Sunday, Jan. 12 — Snowshoe hike, 10 a.m. to noon, Lake George Regional Park — Townsend Trail (east side) The total hike will be about four miles. Parking for the trailhead is in the same lot as the boat launch. Bring water and snowshoes. Friendly dogs are welcome, but their person must bring poop bags.
Wednesday, Jan. 15 — Skills Clinic: Dressing Warm, 5 to 6 p.m., Main Street Skowhegan, 48 Court St. Wearing the right clothing is the first step to having a great time outdoors. Come learn what to wear and what not to wear on your next adventure this winter — hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and anything in between. There will also be tips and tricks for finding cheap gear. This is a great intro class for all ages.
Friday, Jan. 17 — Moonlight snowshoe hike, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Yankee Woodlot Trails. This is a great hike for beginners who want to come out for a nice walk in the woods. Hikers will use headlamps and flashlights to illuminate the way. The total hike will be about one mile with little elevation gain. This is a great way to begin your weekend and a great activity for all ages and abilities. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but their person must bring poop bags. Hikers should also bring water and snow shoes.
