April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Apr. 32017

NORWAY – April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. During this month and throughout the year, The Family Birthplace at Stephens Memorial Hospital works closely in supporting families and reducing the risk of child abuse and neglect.

Every parent who delivers at The Family Birthplace receives a DVD titled, “The Period of Purple Crying” as well as information on Safe Sleep for Infants. The DVD is offered to help parents understand the features of crying in normal infants that may be frustrating which can lead to shaking or abuse. If parents can understand and handle this normal early crying period, they are less likely to feel stressed to the point where they shake their baby out of frustration and anger.

Stephens Memorial Hospital is a Gold Status Certified Save Sleep Hospital and takes pride in promoting safe sleep practice in the community. Placing infants to sleep on their backs without blankets in a sleep sack, and making sure there aren’t any bumpers, or toys in the bed is best sleep practice and helps in the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The Family Birthplace gifts a sleep sack to every baby.

Stephens Memorial Hospital is a Leapfrog 2016 Top Rural Hospital and is a member of MaineHealth. Visit Western Maine Health on the Internet at www.wmhcc.org or follow us at Facebook.com/StephensMemorialME/.
