TURNER — Shelby Cronkhite of Turner, a senior at Leavitt Area High School, is the school’s 2017 Principal’s Award winner, Principal Eben Shaw announced.
The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
“Since her freshmen year, Shelby has proven herself to be a strong student and engaged member of our school community,” Shaw said in a news release. “She has been president of her class for the last three years, successfully leading the group through countless class activities.”
Shaw said that Cronkhite has been involved in the National Honor Socieity and has maintained “the highest academic standards.”
“Shelby is an outstanding student and an excellent role model for the students of our school and district,” he said.
Cronkhite, Shaw and other award winners and their principals attended an awards luncheon in Bangor April 1.
Students winning the award get a plaque, and five are awarded $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, former principals and executive directors of the Maine Principals’ Association. This year an additional five $1000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals and the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine’s school administrators.
