St. Dom’s fifth-graders devote time to spritual, physical fitness

LEWISTON — Fifth graders at St. Dominic Academy recently left their classrooms to cultivate both their physical and spiritual fitness.
After holding a month-long collection, the students headed to St. Mary’s Food Pantry in Lewiston with the donations and sorted the hundreds of cans of vegetables, fruit, beans, and soup and the hundreds of boxes of pasta and rice, baby food, formula, diapers and more for the organization.
As one of the largest emergency food pantries in Maine, the St. Mary’s Food Pantry has been providing food assistance for residents of the greater Lewiston-Auburn area for over 20 years. The food pantry is located in the heart of downtown Lewiston across from Kennedy Park on the corner of Bates and Walnut streets and serves more than 1,000 people weekly.
“At St. Dom’s, we have all found overwhelming blessings and an air of gratitude helps us see that,” said Timothy Gallic, president of the academy. “We are very proud of our fifth graders and their commitment to caring for those in need.”
Later in the month, the fifth-graders were off to St. Joseph’s College of Maine in Standish for a special health and fitness event, “Are You Fitter Than a Fifth Grader?”
“Every year, St. Joe’s chooses an outstanding school to participate and, this year, they chose St. Dom’s,” said Bethany Fox, a physical education teacher at the academy. “The event consisted of obstacle courses, fitness games, nutrition and health trivia games, and other fitness-based activities.”
The St. Dom’s students made quite an impression on their hosts.
“It was such an incredible experience,” said Fox. “St. Joe’s actually asked if they could collaborate with St. Dom’s more this year. I even had quite a few of my students mention that they wanted to attend college there when they are older. My heart was so happy.”
