OTISFIELD — If you’ve ever wanted to find out how old your house is, or what property your ancestor might have owned, the Otisfield Historical Society can help. This month, Pat Shearman, Oxford County register of deeds, and Jennifer Dilworth, register of probate, will explain how to delve into the county records via computer.
The program, presented by the Otisfield Historical Society, will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 20, at the Otisfield Community Hall, Route 121. A short business meeting will precede the presentation.
Shearman will explain that uncovering all the previous owners owners of a property involves a complicated search through the county land records in an organized way, from present to past. Searching through probate records to find an ancestor’s estate papers is a similar process, and often reveals new details about individuals who died in Oxford County, according to the historical society.
In days not so long ago, a researcher had to trek to the court house in South Paris to do the research, but now it’s possible with online access. The program will be the first of four public programs to be presented by the historical society in 2017.
All are free and open to the public and the society particularly encourages anyone interested in genealogical research to attend.
