Androscoggin Historical Society Oct. 5 topic is area’s telephone history

Oct. 32019

AUBURN — The Androscoggin Historical Society will present a program on “The Telephone in Androscoggin County, including Lewiston and Auburn,” 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.
The event will take place at the West Auburn School House, 740 West Auburn Road.
The Lewiston/Auburn Telephone Automatic Telephone Company launched a new era in communication 1904. Stan DeOrsey, an Auburn native, became interested in telephones when the “old fashioned” crank systems were being converted to dial in the local area. He has subsequently researched over 400 telephone companies operating at some time in Maine. Now retired from I.B.M., he’s still interested in Maine telephone history.
Admission for this program is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. For more information about the society, call 207-784-0586 or visit www.androhistory.org.
