HALLOWELL — Project partners gathering submissions for a mural project are celebrating the generous pledge of an anonymous matching challenge grant of up to $1,000 to encourage community support for the Hallowell “Welcoming City” project. The project partners, including Hallowell Arts and Culture Committee, Hallowell Area Board of Trade, Kennebec Valley Art Association, Harlow Gallery and local artist Christopher Cart, received the exciting news this week from City Manager Nate Rudy.
August Rudy, a high school senior at Watershed School in Camden, is coordinating the project.
“I’m pretty excited about the Welcoming City proclamation and what it means to people who feel like outsiders,” she said. “We want them to know they are not just accepted, but welcomed, in central Maine communities like Hallowell.” Deb Fahy, chair of the Hallowell Arts and Culture Committee, added “We were contacted by a local property owner wanting to collaborate on a public art project on his prominent downtown wall, and August showed up just at the right moment with her project idea.”
Ms. Rudy, who plans to study art in a yet-to-be-chosen college this fall, will work on another downtown mural project this spring and summer with Cart, who recently painted a large mural celebrating the history of communities along the Kennebec River and prominently featured in the halls of the new Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.
The group shared a call for art for the “Welcoming City” mural project in support of the community’s recent effort to adopt a proclamation that Hallowell is a welcoming and inclusive city for “unique, creative, diverse and tolerant people” from all backgrounds, lifestyles, races, ethnicities, and religions. Chosen designers will be asked to reproduce the design on a provided 4’x4′ panel to be mounted on the side of a prominent building in downtown Hallowell this June. Donated funds will pay for project overhead and production costs and any remaining funds may be used to fund future art-based, community development activities related to the mural project.
