LEWISTON — Timothy Morin, son of Mike and Cindy Morin of Sabattus, received his Gold Medal of Achievement in a special “Court of Honor” ceremony held at First Assembly of God church in Lewiston. The Gold Medal of Achievement is the most honored and highly respected award a Royal Ranger can earn and is similar to the Eagle rank of the Boy Scouts of America.
Morin joined Royal Rangers in 2009 at Outpost 16 in Lewiston at the age of 5. In addition to earning the GMA award, Morin was selected as the Outpost Ranger of the Year in his age group in 2011. In 2015, the Gold Medalist attended a Junior Leadership Training Camp in Gardner, Mass. As a part of the advancement program in Royal Rangers, Morin has participated in a number of service projects, including serving food at Hope Haven Gospel Mission, organizing food at Good Shepherd Food Bank, and directing runners at a 5K race held to benefit a local organization helping abused women.
One of the annual Royal Ranger events he has excelled at is Pinewood Derby. In the 7 years he made and raced pinewood derby cars, he amassed 14 first place trophies, 7 second place trophies, a trophy for best paint job and a trophy for fastest heat. Another ranger activity he enjoys is shooting. Through Royal Rangers, Morin has gained experience in shooting BB gun, air rifle, small bore rifle, high power rifle, black powder rifle, hand gun and shotgun.
Morin is a member of Frontiersman Camping Fellowship, a program of the Royal Rangers, and serves as their service/honor organization, similar to the Boy Scouts of America’s Order of the Arrow. In 2016, Morin was chosen to be the District Scout, serving as a liaison between the FCF leaders and the boys of the chapter.
In his spare time, Morin enjoys camping, boating, fishing, swimming, boogie boarding, shooting, snow skiing and playing video games. In addition, he has been active in the AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) program at a local Baptist church longer than he has been in Rangers. Since beginning in this program, Morin has earned the Challenge, Excellence and Timothy awards. Future plans include possibly working as a border patrol agent or working in some other aspect of law enforcement.
Royal Rangers is a worldwide ministry of the Assemblies of God designed to provide youth with challenging activities while providing them with Christian instruction. Royal Rangers ministers to young people in the United States and in more than 87 countries. A merit-driven scout group for boys, the trail to the GMA requires commitment, perseverance and goal setting. Long hours are spent in study, trial and error, and achievement as the various merit badges and hours of service to community and church are completed.
Since 1964, when the first GMA was awarded, less than one percent of Royal Rangers have earned the award. Up until this year, the Lewiston church had given out only two GMA medals since it started the Royal Rangers program back in 1962.
