Robert “Bob” D. Brackett
1931 – 2017
LEWISTON — Robert “Bob” D. Brackett of Monmouth died peacefully at Russell Park Rehabilitation & Living Center March 24. Born January 27, 1931, in Farmington, the son of Robert N. Brackett and Agnes (Masterman) Brackett, he graduated from Jay High School.
He was known for his extremely strong work-ethic, starting his first job at 8 years-old, and even after he retired, never sitting still for long. Bob worked in the forest industry for most of his life. In addition, he owned and operated a saw mill in Leeds for several years. He understood the value of schooling and encouraged his family to focus on getting an education so they could have opportunities he didn’t have.
Bob lived for many years with his loving companion Lydia. Upon retiring, Bob and Lydia began traveling regularly. During this time, Bob enjoyed visiting every U.S. state and especially enjoyed Alaska, making several trips there and acquiring countless friends. He had a gift for easily engaging everyone he came in contact with in a friendly conversation ending with smiles and laughter. He was known as a great storyteller. Those fortunate enough to spend time with him were regularly treated to one of his extremely sharp and witty stories.
Bob considered himself blessed and enjoyed the little things in life. He had a great love of family and friends. There was nothing better for him than when his extended family was together, especially for seafood feasts, including family shrimp feeds.
The oldest of seven children, he was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Agnes; his sister Harriett Mayo; and three brothers — Russell, Arthur and Malcolm.
Bob is survived by his five children — son David P. Brackett and wife Jo of Leeds; daughter Beth Zarecki and husband John of California; daughter Judy Smith and husband William of Philadelphia; daughter Shelby Scully and husband William of West Hartford, Conn.; step-daughter Mary Iris and husband Anthony of Cape Elizabeth — 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, along with two remaining brothers — Richard “Dick” Brackett of Auburn and Clifford Brackett of Florida.
Services were held under the direction of BRAGDON~FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 707 Main Street, Monmouth.
