Trail-work volunteers needed at Pleasant Mountain

DENMARK — Loon Echo Land Trust is inviting anyone interested in clearing out winter debris to come to the Ledges Trail April 15 at Pleasant Mountain Preserve for the first trail-work day of spring. The Appalachian Mountain Club’s Maine Chapter volunteers and Loon Echo staff will lead participants in clearing drainage, building rock steps and removing brush.

This work day is open to all levels from beginner to expert. Tools and training will be provided. Meet at the Ledges Trail parking area on Mountain Road, three miles from its intersection with Rt. 302 in at 7:45 a.m. Appropriate work clothes, pants and boots are required; please bring plenty of water and snacks. This will require approximately 6 hours, and the work woul be considered strenuous.

Also coming up is the 17th annual Loon Echo Trek to benefit Loon Echo Land Trust. Registration for the Sept. 16 event at Shawnee Peak Ski Area is now open. This is an opportunity to be part of the best biking and hiking event in Maine! Choose from the 25, 50, 80 and 100 mile bike, 4.6 or 6 mile hike or do a bit of both with the “bike & hike” combo.

All outdoor events are subject to weather conditions and/or date changes. For hikes and work days, always wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather conditions and varied terrain. Events will be cancelled when dangerous conditions or heavy weather are forecast and any changes will be noted on our website and Facebook page.
