AUGUSTA — David Jensen, an Eagle Scout candidate with West Gardiner Troop 613 has designed and built 10 wooden benches for Viles Arboretum.
The benches will be used throughout the 224-acre preserve and trail system to enhance the visitor experience, providing comfortable seating and resting locations along the trails, according to a news release from the Arboretum.
“David approached us last year asking if there was a project he might work on that would benefit the Arboretum and the thousands of visitors who come to see our botanical collections, wildlife, sculptures, interpretive signs,” the release said. “We knew we needed nice wooden benches for hikers and wildlife viewers to sit so we suggested this to David. Off he went and in a few weeks he returned with this beautiful design.”
David got Lapointe Lumber Company to donated lumber, and he got friends and parents to assist in construction, the release said.
Mark DesMeules, executive director of the Viles Arboretum commented, “It has been a great pleasure to work with David on this project. He has been an excellent communicator and he follows through on everything he says he will. David is clearly an individual with initiative and the ability to go places.
