RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust has acquired 70 acres on the eastern shoreline of Rangeley Lake’s Hunter Cove abutting the 100-acre Hunter Cover Wildlife Sanctuary. The Estate of Carl W. Lewin and the Janet H Lewin Living Trust offered the property for sale for several years before approaching the trust to negotiate terms that would ensure this property remain undeveloped in perpetuity, according to a news release from the trust.
The land has been dedicated as Lewin Woods “to honor the generations of Lewins that treasured this land; playing in the forest and catching crayfish on the shoreline.”
The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust will maintain and monitor the property, while also providing access to the public for recreation and education. The property has 44 acres of forested uplands with mature stands of balsam fir, white spruce and quaking aspen, with the remaining acreage wetlands.
The entire property is within the Rangeley Game Sanctuary, a protection zone that provides critical winter habitat to deer and a slew of song birds, nesting loons, amphibians, snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, lynx and other large mammals, the release said.
The trust was able to buy the property largely through a grant from the Natural Resource Conservation Program. The remainder was donated by RLHT board members and membership. The addition of the property brings the amount of acres on Rangeley Lake conserved by the trust to more than 1,650.
