WINTRHOP — Zak St. Germain was presented the Eagle Scout rank during a ceremony held on Aug. 1 at the Winthrop Town Office. Presentations to honor St. Germain were made by Pine Tree Council, Kennebec Valley District, a representative of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office, and Jeff DeHart, aka Turtle, from the Bushcraft program at Camp Bomazeen in Belgrade.
Troop 604 Scoutmaster Samantha Remington called the evening to order and Assistant Scoutmaster Randy Hooper, who is also a member of the Pine Tree Council Advancement Committee, served as master of ceremonies.
St. Germain’s father, Andre, presented him with the award and his mother, Michelle Rioux, replaced his Troop 604 neckerchief with the Eagle Scout neckerchief. Also attending was his brother, Sam.
St. Germain’s Eagle Scout project was providing leadership on construction of an outdoor shed for Winthrop Grade School, to store toys and equipment. The total number of volunteer hours on the project was 267.5. He said he is looking forward to life’s challenges. “I am hoping to go to Maine Maritime Academy for Marine Engineering,” he said. “I would like to work on a boat for a few years and then work on dry land.”
St. Germain enjoyed his experiences at Camp Bomzaeen’s Bushcraft program. “My favorite part of Scouting is going to Scout Camp, especially Bushcraft at Camp Bomazeen,” he said. “You learn about Native Americans and Pioneer Life.”
DeHart presented him with a lantern so he can always find his way, and a tomahawk.
Outside of scouting, St. Germain competed in track and cross country at Winthrop High School, receiving varsity athlete honors every quarter, and has been a member of the National Honor Society.
