Hiram Historical Society meeting July 13 will focus on Maine tourism

Jul. 82019

HIRAM — The next meeting of the Hiram Historical Society will be held Sat. July 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the Great Ossipee Museum, 20 Historical Ridge. The business meeting will begin at 1 p.m., and the program will follow at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Guest speaker Linda Snow McLoon, former director of Portland Harbor Museum, will tell the story of Maine’s early tourism — “Vacationland: Growth and Development of Tourism in Maine” — focusing on its interior lakes, principally Belgrade Lakes.
She will talk about the time tourists, “with newly found leisure,” began to come to Maine in large numbers for cool, clear mountain air and clean refreshing water.
Society President Sally Williams will present contrasting images from the region around Hiram.
The meeting is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 207-615-4390.
