SUMNER — A free Folklorico Ollimpaxqui performance will be held at the Hartford-Sumner Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9.
The performance by the traditional Mexican ballet troupe is sponsored by Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters, Buckfield Junior/Senior High School, Greg Reed’s Spanish classes, Hartford Sumner Elementary School and its student council.
The school will be open from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to showcase exhibits about Mexico in all pre-K through sixth-grade classrooms, and on display will exhibits about be animals, states, folk tales, food, famous people and more. There will be a community pot luck meal in the cafeteria from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m..
Highlights include the pre-Columbian rituals of the Aztecs, colorful music of the Bamba, a picturesque ribbon-tying ceremony in Veracruz, the solemnity and drama of the “Deer Dance,” eloquent dancing of Jalisco and Michoacan with songs and traditions of the other distinctive regions of this exciting country.
The free event is part of a week-long cultural event held yearly at Hartford-Sumner Elementary School, which includes participation with the BJSHS.
The school is at 145 Main St. (Route 219) in East Sumner.
