AUBURN — The American Red Cross as well as the Auburn, Augusta and Lewiston fire departments and other community partners are teaming up to “Sound the Alarm”_ _Saturday, April 27, to save lives through free smoke alarm installation and preparedness education. The Maine event part of national campaign to install 100,000 free smoke alarms between April 27 and May 12.
Maine’s event will take place Saturday, April 27, focusing on the New Auburn area of Auburn, the East Side of Augusta and Pleasant Street and its side streets (Ward 7 area) in Lewiston. Volunteer teams will install free smoke alarms, check existing alarms, help create escape plans and provide other preparedness tips for residents.
Home fires kill seven people every day in the United States – more than all other natural disasters combined. Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of death by half and an escape plan further increases the chances of survival. Sixty percent of home fire deaths take place in homes that didn’t have properly working smoke alarms or any smoke alarms at all.
Since its 2014 launch, the campaign has installed more than 1.6 million free smoke alarms and saved at least 582 lives — including three last year in Maine. For more information, visit SoundTheAlarm.org/Maine.
