LEWISTON — Two Lewiston non-profit organizations and one each in Auburn and New Gloucester were among five that were awarded Androscoggin Bank Greater Giving bi-annual grants. The Greater Giving program is a community impact effort that was launched last year as a way to support nonprofit organizations that benefit the community with economic development, education and the arts, according to a news release from the program.

The Auburn Public Library received $1,830 to fund the creation of a literacy program in the County Jail to encourage incarcerated parents to bond with their children through reading and to improve the literacy skills of both parent and child.

Center for Wisdom’s Women in Lewiston received $2,500 to help the organization move its urban gardening social enterprise from Phase One, a start-up experimental period, to Phase Two, a marketing stage with the goal of having products for sale by the Maine Department of Agriculture by the end of the year.

Lewiston Public School biology teacher Mike McGraw was awarded $670 to fund a field trip to Morse Mountain Conservatory in Phippsburg for high school sophomores. More than 100 students will be involved in the field trip, which connects the environment with education and allows students to gain a better understanding of applied science. It’s the 17th year the trip has been offered by Lewiston Public Schools.

Wayfinder Schools in New Gloucester was awarded $2,500. The alternative high school serving at-risk youth and teen parents throughout Maine will use the money to help fund a nine-month residential program and a home-based Passages program for teen parents.

A Company of Girls in Portland was awarded $2,500 to support its free, core after-school program that provides 200 hours of intensive, year-long engagement in the arts for girls that are recognized as low-income, high-risk or are experiencing emotional/social issues in the Portland area.
