AUBURN — Edward Little High School men’s basketball team hosted cross-town rivals –the Lewiston High School Blue Devils — Dec. 10 in what turned out to be only the second game of the 2018-19 season.
Following a state championship year, the Red Eddies were playing without several key seniors and looking to regain the momentum propelling them to the gold ball victory in March. They appear to have found what they were looking for.
With a strong start, the Eddies built a lead around the key play of returning Wol Maiwen, Storm Jipson and Austin Brown. Adding their talents, Cam Yorke and Maxwell Creaser helped the Eddies secure their second win of the season, 75-56. Several teammates contributed to the cause.

The Blue Devils played scrappy, intense basketball, slashing to the basket and scoring enough points to beat most other teams in Class AA.
The rivalry ended at the buzzer, after which both teams and many of the fans stayed to watch the presentation of the Gordon “John” Gillette award, given annually to a player in the Edward Little-Lewiston home game who displays all the qualities Gillette embodied — sportsmanship, desire, hustle, dedication and enjoyment of the game.
Gillette taught and coached at both schools. Maiwen received the award for the third consecutive year.
GIRLS GAME
The following night, the Edward Little women’s team traveled to Lewiston High School for its cross-town match-up. Returning starters from EL’s gold ball team — Grace Fontaine, Jade Perry and Chantel Ouellette — were joined by returning veterans Hannah Chaput and Caroline Hammond.
Both teams got off to a slow start, with the majority of first quarter points coming on foul shots; Emily Strachan nailed seven for Lewiston, and the Devils played tough defense throughout the game, punctuated by multiple turnovers.
By halftime, EL held a 28-15 lead, but the third quarter saw mostly even play. Things heated up in the fourth, with Lewiston pulling to within five, but EL held on to secure a 52-45 victory.
