L/A Arts exhibition will feature prints by Cake, year of bird

LEWISTON — A fixture in the Lewiston-Auburn art community for many years, Dan Cake, who died in 2016, was admired for his paintings, drawings, scratchboards and prints of the natural world. as well as for his kind and generous disposition.
L/A Arts will feature an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints by Cake, “Dan Cake: A Tribute to the Artist in the Year of the Bird,” from Friday, Dec. 7, through Sunday, Feb. 24.

The exhibition and gallery presentation are free and open to the public.
The exhibition will focus on Dan’s exquisitely detailed depictions of Maine birds, which have been treasured and collected by so many in Maine and beyond. In addition to honoring Cake’s legacy and his dedication to his art, the exhibition will celebrate the closing month of the Year of the Bird. In 1918, Congress passed the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to protect birds from wanton killing. To observe the centennial, national organizations such as the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Geographic, the National Audubon Society and BirdLife International partnered to declare 2018 the Year of the Bird.
On view through February, the exhibition also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of The Stanton Bird Club, which was founded in Lewiston in 1919, and named in honor of Jonathan Y. Stanton, a professor at Bates College. Over the years, a number of parcels of land were donated to the club and the property has grown to be the 450-acre Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, in the heart of Lewiston. The club also owns and manages the 401-acre Woodbury Bird Sanctuary in Monmouth.
The L/A Arts Gallery is at 221 Lisbon St.. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
