LEWISTON – Community Credit Union recently announced a round of donations in Turner and Lewisiton as part of the Credit Unions Campaign for Ending Hunger.
Recipients were the Turner Food Pantry, and in Lewiston, New Beginnings and Maine Community Integration.
The Turner Food Pantry received a $750 donation. The pantry is in the Boofy Quimby Memorial Center in North Turner and is staffed by volunteers from the North Turner Union Presbyterian Church. This year, they served more than 50 Turner families throughout the year. Turner residents seeking assistance are welcome to call the Food Pantry at 207-395-5256 or they may contact the Turner Town Office by calling 207-225-3414.
Maine Community Integration received a check in the amount of $250. The organization works to promote cultural understanding and equal opportunities to asylum seekers in the Lewiston-Auburn community. The donation will assist clients of MCI with receiving nutritious food and goods for themselves and their families.
New Beginnings also received a check of $250. New Beginnings serves an average of 700 teens and young adults each year through its many programs; shelter, transitional living and outreach. Each year, about 500 teens and young adults are served through its Drop-In Center in Lewiston.
“Addressing hunger and food insecurity for young people is one important way that we help homeless youth find the stability and opportunities they need to become successful adults,” said Director of Development and Community Services Rachel Spencer-Reed.
The donations were made in June and announced recently as part of Community Credit Union’s participation in the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger initiative Maine Credit Unions have raised over $8 million since 1990 to help end hunger in Maine. At the end of each year, 100 percent of the money raised by each individual participating credit union is given back to that credit union to be distributed to hunger organization in their community.
In 2017, participating Maine Credit Unions raised a new record total of more than $740,000 for the Ending Hunger Campaign.
