Feb. 282017

AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Baptist Association is hosting a workshop on how to assist military members, veterans and their families’ spritiual health on March 18. The free “When Troops Come Home” workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 393 Water St. and is open to all faith groups.

“This workshop is essential training for faith community leaders and other members of the community,” according to a news release from the Baptist assocition. The workshop will be led by Maine National Guard Col. Andrew Gibson.

Gibson is the Joint Forces Headquarters chaplain for the Maine Army National Guard. He has worked in the interfaith atmosphere for more than 25 years, according to the release, and is the former pastor of the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield.

“When men and women participate in military service, it affects them, their families, and in a very special way, their spirituality,” Gibson said in the release. “Some experience a renewal of spiritual and faith connection, while many others lose their sense of union with their God, their soul, their spirit self. As Houses of Faith, we are uniquely positioned to reach out to these warriors and their families and help them re-establish or even establish for the first time, the spiritual connection that is vital in living a whole life.”

An RSVP by March 12 is required to attend the workshop. For information, contact Linda Hadley-Rood at 458-9842 or liharo@aol.com.
