CANCUN, Mexico – Twenty New England-based members of TEAMUSA Karate recently traveled to Cancun, Mexico for the International Games 2017 hosted by the World Congress of Martial Arts. They were lead by Master Brent J. Crisci, director of the United Martial Arts Academies, and a coach for TeamUSA Karate for the last 18 years.
All the New England team members had qualified for their spots on the national team at the KicksUSA National Championships held in May 2016. They trained throughout the year in fighting, forms and weapons to represent the U.S.A. and Go For The Gold! Participants from New England included Crisci, Augusta; Ryan, Colin, and Isabel Chamberland, Jennifer Krawzcyk, Jacob Munier, Kiara Simmonds, Tyler Mangin, Brian MacNamara, Liberty wells, Chase Cloutier, Luke Hopkins, Winthrop; Nicole Steinhagen, Portland; Matthieu Sherburne, Rochester, N.H.; Justin Sweeney, Rutland, Vt.; and Jennifer Moyer, Mansfield Center, Conn.
The opening ceremonies were lead by Dr. Terry Free, who took over for the founder of the WCMA, Dr. Harold Mayle who passed away in 2016, and experienced an amazing demonstration by the host country, Team Mexico. There were also six exclusive Black Memorial medals with Dr. Mayle’s chop and signature cast in them, presented to the remaining living executive board members. Crisci was honored and humbled to accept one of these commemorative medals.
When the dust settled on the International battleground, Crisci TeamUSA members had captured 18 gold medals for the U.S. and a total medal count of over 36. The team members then got to enjoy four days celebrating in Cancun, with speed boats, snorkeling , diving and even a pirate ship battle. The next WCMA Internationals Games will be held in January 2019 and a qualifier for TeamUSA will be the KicksUSA Nationals to be held in Maine on Saturday May 20, 2017.
