LEWISTON — Six duets from Maine will perform at Denny Breau’s “Happy Together” concert to support on-going improvements at Lewiston’s Pettingill School Park.
The Nov. 25 show will be Breau’s fifth fundraiser to benefit the park project spearheaded by Friends of Pettingill.
The concert will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Gendron Franco Center, 46 Cedar St. Tickets are $20 per person and are available on the Franco Center web site.
Breau will be performing with his wife, Ann Breau, a flautist with jazz and classical training, who often shares the stage with her husband. Audiences will be pleased to learn one of the busiest duos in Maine, singer Kathy Haley and pianist Phil House, will be on the docket. Also on the bill is the country-folk duo Donnie Katlin and Jewel Clark from Bethel, who have been playing music together for 40 years. Clark is the daughter of the legendary Maine yodeler Slim Clark.
Two of the most popular husband and wife teams in Central Maine music, Frank Coffin and Malinda Liberty, will be back on stage in support of the park. Both were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016. Mike Preston & Kim Curry, a country and honky-tonk duo from Poland, have also accepted Denny’s invitation to join in the production. For young and old-timers alike who love bluegrass, Ken & Jane Brooks from Athens will round out the show.
The “Happy Together” theme is a fitting description of the six duos and the music they will be playing. The annual Friends of Pettingill fundraiser, produced by Breau, is frequently sold out and has become one of the most anticipated shows in Central Maine.
Pettingill School Park is the newest playground and greenspace in the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn, and many of the park improvements have been purchased through Friends of Pettingill financial campaigns. Vice-chairman Bill Maroldo has worked with Breauon all the shows and says it’s their biggest fundraiser.
“We would not have been able to accomplish so much at the park without the support of Denny and his many musician friends,” said Maroldo. The Lenny Breau Pergola, a tribute to Breau’s renowned jazz guitarist brother, is one of the park’s most iconic structures and was built by students from the Lewiston Regional Technical Center at Lewiston High School. The pergola is fast becoming a popular site in L/A for birthdays, concerts, reunions and weddings.
The park has also co-hosted the police department’s “Movie Night in the Park,” the annual “Bike to School Day,” “Maine Arbor Week” projects and many other community events since it became a park on the site where the former Pettingill Elementary School on College Street existed until 2010.
