LEWISTON — Christy Gardner, a retired Army veteran and Auburn native and a para-athlete, will speak at the next LA Metro Chamber breakfast.
The breakfast is 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Ramada Hotel & Conference Center, 490 Pleasant St.
The topic is “The Heart of a Soldier,” and Gardner, 36, will talk about her experiences after sustaining an injury overseas in 2006. Gardner served as a military police officer and spent five years rehabbing following a brain injury, including having to learn English and math all over again. Once she was able to live on her own, she started participating in adaptive sports. She learned to play sled hockey, participating with the U.S. Women’s Paralympic Team, where she was assistant captain, and the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Team. She also established the New England Warriors Sled Hockey Team.
Gardner also recently started throwing shot put and discus internationally, and just came back from a meet in Italy, with the hopes of qualifying for the paralympic summer games in Tokyo 2020. Her service dog, Moxie, is her constant companion and can often be found sitting on the player bench or chasing the pucks down the ice or fetching shot puts on the farm. When Gardner isn’t competing or training, she is working on a Labrador farm.
