LEWISTON — The Point in Time Count, a national event that takes place on the same night across the country every January and counts the sheltered and unsheltered homeless people across the country, is looking for volunteers.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires an annual count of homeless persons who are sheltered in emergency shelters, transitional housing and Safe Havens on a single night.
Volunteers participate each year because the PIT Count results are what generates federal money and resources that are allocated to assist the homeless in the community who need it. For the PIT Count to be successful and accurate, it requires many, many volunteers.
Jim Tracey, a local U.S. Army veteran, who is disabled, has been a volunteer for four years in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
“It’s helpful to the community,” Tracey said. “I specifically try to help veterans when I can.”
Tracey said that anyone who’s “willing to put up with the brisk January weather” can volunteer.
