LEWISTON – The evening of Thursday, March 9, will provide an opportunity for community members to participate in a positive communication workshop hosted by the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council as part of their recently launched campaign, T.A.L.K. – Treat All Listeners Kindly. The interactive workshop will be facilitated by Stephanie Kelley-Romano, associate professor and chair of the Rhetoric Department at Bates College, Lewiston. It will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the YWCA, 130 East Avenue, Lewiston, and is free to attend.
Chair Jazy Dumas noted, “LYAC wants to encourage individuals to communicate with others in a respectful manner. Whether the conversation is at school, at home, out in the community, or in political discussions, we are asking people to share their perspective, not their attitude. In today’s world, we all hear it and see it: put-downs, bullying, insults, and social media hateful words. Words are powerful, and we hope more people will start using them in better ways.” Romano’s response to leading the interactive T.A.L.K. workshop was, “Yes, yes, yes!”
Romano has worked at Bates College since 1999 and has bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Emerson College in Boston and a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Her research interests include feminism, television criticism, politics, conspiracy, narrative, and myth. She is particularly interested in understanding how people come to believe certain things and strives to inform students as to how to create, and critique, arguments that advance social justice in the public sphere.
