TURNER — Turner Public Library wants to connect folks to fiber — all kinds of fiber — from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Leavitt Institute, 98 Matthews Way.
TPL’s “Mostly Local, Almost Famous Fiber Fest” will feature a fiber marketplace with fleece and fiber from raw to finished yarns, including hand-dyed roving, batts, yarns, fiber tools and more.
Visitors may purchase raffle tickets for fiber related products, goodies at a bake sale, and enjoy a sit-in area where fiber enthusiasts can congregate and share their craft. This is the first year for this event, and the library is looking to see if there is support to make the Mostly Local, Almost Famous Fiber Fest an annual event.
The festival is an outgrowth of Turner Public Library’s monthly fiber arts get-togethers, where people come together to share their craft.
“With the input of our regular handcrafters, we realized people wanted someone to bring together producers and crafters in a smaller, friendlier, and interactive space. Maine has a tremendous number of people on both sides of the fiber arts equation who would like the chance to interact in a way that they can’t at larger festivals or online. If we provide a welcoming, conducive space, we think people will enjoy meeting the producers, asking questions, and trying out the tools,” said Ellen Bradley, the library’s assistant director. “We’ll also have the library’s collection of fiber equipment and tools available, which is a great try-before-you-buy opportunity.”
Several vendors will offer demonstrations on fiber preparation, spinning and other ways to use fleece and fiber. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in learning how animal and plant fibers become yarns and textiles.
There are a still a few spaces available for vendors who wish to participate. There is also a need for volunteers for both Friday, Nov. 9, to help with setup, and on Saturday, Nov. 10, during the festival.
