Lithgow October events include personal safety, Maine doughnut history

Oct. 32018

AUGUSTA — October events at Lithgow Public Library include an introduction to personal safety workshop and a history of the doughnut.
Introduction to Personal Safety, for individuals 14 and older, no experience necessary will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, and taught by Augusta’s Martial Arts Institute.

The one-hour hands-on workshop will cover staying safe in a variety of situations and will introduce participants to tools that will help them recognize possible dangerous encounters as well as how to handle them, from outward appearance and confidence level to using the body and everyday items as weapons. Focus will be placed on prevention strategies as well as mental and physical preparation. The instructors, Hollie and Kevin Webb, will employ a variety of techniques that are easy and practical to use.
The workshop is free and open to the public, but class size is limited, so registration is required. Call the library at 207-626-2415 or stop by the reference desk on the second floor to sign up.
At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, the library will host “The Hole History: Origins of the American-Style Donut.”
Alexis Iammarino, curator of the Hole History exhibition and author of the Hole History catalog, will discuss the origins of doughnuts, including whether the American-style doughnut originated in Maine.
Local doughnuts will be provided. Support for the Hole History exhibition catalog is provided by The Kindling Fund, administered by SPACE as part of the Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts Regional Regranting Network.
The discussion is free and open to the public.
Lithgow Library is at 45 Winthrop St. For more information, call 297-626-2415 or visit www.lithgow.lib.me.us.
