Maine spruce gum to be Rangeley Public Library topic

Sep. 162018

RANGELEY — Maine spruce gum will be the topic when Dave Fuller speaks at the Rangeley Public Library Wednesday, Oct. 3.
The talk will begin at 6 p.m.

Fuller, who has been at the library previously to teach gardening classes as part of his job with Maine Cooperative Extension, is coming back this time to discuss the topic of his upcoming book on the subject. Fuller will talk about the history of Maine spruce gum, the first commercial chewing gum in the U.S. — who gathered it, the gum companies, gum boxes, and other uses like medicine, bark canoe sealer and more.
There may be opportunities for audience members to share their own experiences with Maine spruce gum. The library promises not to make participants chew spruce gum.
Call the library at 207-864-5529 or stop by to sign up for the program, which is free.
