Auburn tree inventory has logged 5,583 city trees

AUBURN — A city-wide tree inventory supported by a Project Canopy grant through the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry has been completed.
The study was done in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service helping fund and included 5,583 trees on city streets within the right-of-way.

The Street Tree Inventory is now a layer on the city’s geographic information system, where each tree is identified by species, condition, size, location and more. The Street Tree Inventory will be a valuable tool for the city arborist to quickly identify hazard trees and locations for future planting.
With the Emerald Ash Borer in the state, the city now has the ability to map all of its ash trees within the right-of-way with a click of a button.
Dave Griswold, licensed forester, provided the city’s local grant match through in-kind services. In addition to the Street Tree Inventory, the grant also funded planting26 trees, which the city arborist’s crew is planting on Gamage Avenue.
The Street Tree Inventory will continue to be updated as trees are planted and removed.
