Maine Wisdom Summit to focus on strategies for aging population

Sep. 22018

AUGUSTA — The Maine Wisdom Summit, a forum on aging, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Augusta Civic Center.
The forum will help identify strategies to put public resources to their optimal use to help Mainers age in place.

Most people will need help with activities of daily living and other services as they age. They’ll also need safe and affordable housing and reliable transportation options. Workforce shortages and fragmented care systems will make it hard for many Mainers to get the help they need to live active, healthy, engaged lives they age at home and in community settings.
While there are many inspiring community, regional and statewide efforts underway that are helping Mainers to age in place, the efforts are not integrated or aligned with larger care delivery systems nor supported by a robust long-term care plan.
Policy leaders across many fields will help discuss the current state of aging in Maine at the fifth annual Wisdom Summit, and explore ways formal and informal systems of care can be better aligned and integrated to meet social, medical, behavioral and physical care needs.
It will use a recent report issued by the Cutler Institute of Health & Social Policy, “Charting the Pathway Forward: Redesigning and Realigning Supports and Services for Older Mainers,” as a framework.
The forum will help identify strategies to develop a strong, person-centered, cost-effective long term care infrastructure that is fully integrated and aligned with our care delivery systems and that leverages the power of community efforts.
The results of the forum will guide Maine’s aging policy agenda for the next five years, and organizers are hoping many different voices join the discussion.
