NORWAY — A large group of volunteer coordinators have been meeting regularly to plan the third annual Foothills Food Festival to be held noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 from noon to 8 p.m., rain or shine, at Longley Square.
Sarah Carter, one of the organizers, says “Thanks to this dedicated group, this year’s festival is shaping up to be the biggest and best so far.”
The festival, billed as “A Celebration of Local Food,” is organized by Community Food Matters and sponsored by local businesses.
The gestival will feature local food vendors with a variety of options ranging from barbecue to vegetarian fare, a regional farmers’ market, educational workshops and activities for all ages, a beer-tasting garden with regional brewers, live music and entertainment in two locations from some of Maine’s finest acts.
Amanda Houtari from Celebration Barn will be the festival emcee this year; there is no entrance fee. Advance sale of beer-tasting passes is available through the festival website for a discount, compared to purchasing on the day of the event.
Anna Heath, this year’s volunteer coordinator, is new to the area.”The volunteer community here is very strong,” she noted. “It feels like people really care about this area of Maine and are willing to work together to make big things happen here.”
There are many ways people can still volunteer with one- to two-hours shifts at the festival. She’s encouraging people to sign up on the website at foothillsfoodfestival.org; the form is under the Volunteers tab.
This year’s Festival is striving to be a “zero-waste” event with the use of biodegradable containers and utensils, composting of all food waste, and no, single-use plastic. Coordinators are currently seeking additional volunteers to help with maintaining the zero-waste stations, along with other numerous needs during the festival, as well as set-up and clean-up.
Food vouchers will be awarded to volunteers on the day of the event, along with a volunteer T-shirt; an orrientation session is at the Alan Day Community Garden Friday, Aug. 3.
