RANGELEY — The Rangeley Public Libary will kick off August with two programs featuring music and poetry.
Bill Berlinghoff and Mia Boynton will return Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. to sing folk songs, with both musicians doing half a set. On Aug. 3, Portland Poet Laureate Linda Aldrich will offer two free programs.
Berlinghoff, from Farmington is a Pete-Seeger-era folk singer, songwriter and instrumentalist.
Boynton, a former resident of Rangeley, is a coffeehouse singer and sings Appalachian and English country songs while playing guitar. The performance is free; however, tickets are required.
Aldrich will offer two free programs. There will be a poetry reading Friday, Aug 3., from 1 to 1:45 p.m. followed by a workshop from 2 to 4 p.m., “Place in Poetry: How Where We Live Inhabits Us.”
Whether the places we know are real or imagined, yearned for or run from, enclosed or open to the sky, Aldrich says they work their way into poems with particular power. This workshop will focus on poems anchored or launched by their locations in place and time, and will use those poems as models for writing. This workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience and is limited to the first 12 participants to sign up.
Aldrich earned a master’s degree in poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She teaches part-time at Southern Maine Community College and lives in Portland and Rangeley with her husband, David Miller, and their dog, Simba.
