Adult education teacher receives award

TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult Education recently announced Melanie North has received the 2018 Maine Adult Education Teacher of the Year award at the June MAEA statewide conference. North has been an educator for more than 15 years and has been an instructor in adult education program for the past six. She also serves as ABE coordinator, teaches English/language arts, and coordinates the English as a Second Language acquisition program.

Teacher of the Year Awards recognize educators who exemplify communication, collaboration and instruction based upon learner needs. MSAD 52 Adult Education Director Razell Ward explains, “As our program’s English/Language Arts and Adult Basic Education coordinator, North has infused the teaching of language arts with technology, relevant curriculum, and enthusiasm. Recently, North created a HiSET University course consisting of blended web-based and direct instruction to build skills for student success.”

In addition to being a great teacher, North is also a great teammate. She excels in the role of developing and sharing resources, researching best practices for colleagues, and is always there to offer advice, classroom help and observational support. One of her colleagues said, “She is one of the best teachers I have ever seen in action; I am so lucky to have the opportunity to work with her.” Another noted, “In a nutshell, she is a great model of what a teacher/mentor should be.”
