LEWISTON – Retired Lisbon School Department secretary Lorraine Bard received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award May 17 from Monica Millhime, Rotary president, on behalf of Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Lunch Club members.
The award was presented with 75 attendees during “The Next 100 Years Year in Review and Awards Night,” held at The Carriage House.
Bard has been a Rotarian since 2017, serving as chairwoman for a number of projects for the fellowship group. Throughout the year, she assisted with the Veteran’s Appreciation Fishing Tournament, Balloon Festival, Fire Prevention and Dr. Seuss at Washburn School, the Gift of Food and Gift of Sharing projects, Holiday Caroling at Schooner Estates, the Red Cross Blood Drive, Hearts & Shamrocks for Seniors in conjunction with Washburn School and Schooner Estates, Karaoke Night benefiting Polio Plus, the Annual Auction benefiting community non-profits, and the Autism Movie Event at Flagship Cinema.T
The most impressive service-above-self commitment of creating and editing the club’s first Community Cookbook raised more than $2,000 benefiting Alzheimer’s of Maine.
“Rotarians often designate a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objective of The Rotary Foundation. A world of peace and good will comes closer to reality as Lorraine Bard becomes a Paul Harris Fellow,” said Millhime, adding “Lorraine was selected to receive this recognition because fellow L-A Rotarians believe her life exemplifies the humanitarian and educational objectives of The Rotary Foundation.”
The fellowship was named for Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905. Accompanying Bard at the presentation was her husband Roger and son, Andrew.
The club also awarded six $1,000 scholarships to the local Class of 2018 graduates. Administration introductions were made by Rotarians Chip Morrison, Celeste Yakawonis, Sylvia Plourde, Roger Philippon, Don Grant and Ed Plourde. Recipients included Julia Milks, Edward Little High School; Jillian Rombalski, Leavitt Area High School; Kaitlyn Taylor, Lewiston High School; Deja Miller, Oak Hill High School; Jordan Gregory, Poland Regional High School; and Eisa Lee, Saint Dominic Academy.
Eight Community Partner $500 awards were also presented during the event. Recipients include Amy and Warren Shaw, A Bend in the Road; Jennifer Cartmell, Big Brothers Big Sisters; Officer Joseph Philippon, Lewiston Police Department; Jonathan Carsley, Lisbon Music Booster; Sharon Deveau and Tahlia Chamberlain, Literacy Volunteers; Andrew Bard,principal, Washburn School, Auburn; Joanne Bollinger, Women’s Initiatives that Strengthen & Empower; and Jackie Majerus-Collins, Youth Journalism International.
