PORTLAND — Beth Prelgovisk, a health teacher from Messalonskee High School in Oakland, was recognized as the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year for 2018.
She was presented the award at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Organization’s Conference “Agriculture for ME on Land and Sea.”
Prelgovisk was chosen because of her program that provides high school students with education around the production of food.
“Healthy nutrition is the backbone of high school health programs. Agricultural education provides an opportunity to teach children how to start a plant from seed to harvest, harvest a crop or develop a product from something they’ve grown. It is a time to celebrate the farms and farmers who grow fresh produce in the U.S. and within our state,” she says.
After teaching health and physical education for 15 years, Prelgovisk believes student-driven research encourages self-motivation. Some of the projects resulting at Messalonskee High Schoolare apparent. Gardens and greenhouse as well as aeroponic grow towers and student-driven projects throughout the school.
Maine Agriculture in the Classroom’s mission is “To promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resources among students, educators, and the general public.” The program is funded, in part, by the Maine agriculture specialty license plate.
