AUBURN — Auburn Public Library’s Teen Life Skills series during the month of February features weekly discussions and activities focused on Dating Violence Awareness Month — with attention on healthy relationships.
To further bring awareness to and continue the conversation on this topic, the library will welcome Maine author Maria Padian for a reading and discussion of her newest book, “Wrecked,” from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.
“Wrecked,” a story of realistic fiction, takes place on the campus of McCallum College and tells the story of two freshmen and roommates, Haley and Jenny. When Jenny attends a party at Conundrum House, she arrives back in the dorm much different than when she left.
After Jenny accuses a resident of Conundrum House of rape, there are many different versions of the incident.
“A kaleidoscopic view of a sexual assault on a college campus, ‘Wrecked’ will leave readers thinking about how memory and identity, what’s at stake, and who sits in judgment shape what we all decide to believe about the truth” (mariapadian.com/wrecked.html).
Also joining in this discussion will be community educators Whitney Parrish from Safe Voices and Hannah Johnson from the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services.
Copies of the book will be available for sale (cash or check only), and there will be a signing session immediately following the discussion.
This program is free and open to teens and new adults, ages 12 to 21, and will take place in the Androscoggin Community Room, 49 Spring St.
Before turning full-time to writing fiction, Padian worked as a news reporter, a congressional aide, a radio essayist and a freelance journalist. Her award-winning books include “Brett McCarthy: Work in Progress,” “Jersey Tomatoes Are the Best,” “Out of Nowhere” and “Wrecked.” A graduate of Middlebury College and the University of Virginia, she lives with her family in Brunswick and is currently at work on a new novel.
