CMCC student one of seven to be awarded Gorman scholarship

AUBURN — Tyler Tibbetts, of Jay, a student at Central Maine Community College, is one of seven Maine community college students who were awarded scholarships in honor of Leon A. Gorman at a ceremony held recently at L.L.Bean’s corporate headquarters in Freeport.

A student in CMCC’s life sciences program, Tibbetts is a member of the honors program and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Through the honors program, Tibbetts helped organize trips to conferences in Atlanta and Providence, R.I., at which students presented original research. A peer tutor in biology and chemistry, he plans to transfer to University of New England’ medical biology program after he graduates from CMCC. His ultimate goal is to become a physician.
The Leon A. Gorman Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by the children of Leon and Lisa Gorman in honor of Gorman’s 80th birthday. The scholarship supports Maine community college students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, financial need, and a commitment to community service, a hallmark of the scholarship’s namesake.
“My father was proud to support Maine’s community colleges and its hardworking students. He would have been honored to be associated with these outstanding recipients, their educational aspirations and their dedication to their families and communities,” said Jennifer Wilson on behalf of her family.
