AUGUSTA — The University of Maine at Augusta dedicated its baseball fields to Norm and Teresa Elvin in recognition of their support of UMA and their dedication to the Augusta community.
The dedication took place on May 17.
“Given that the UMA’s baseball fields are a true ‘community collaboration,’ it is a fitting tribute to dedicate the baseball fields to the Elvins.” said a UMA news release. “Through a unique partnership, UMA and the city of Augusta have found a way to expand access to UMA’s baseball fields. The city of Augusta youth and adult sports teams utilize UMA’s baseball fields in exchange for the city’s maintenance of the baseball fields, thereby expanding community access to the field space.”
The Elvins, who live in Palermo, “are champions of UMA and its mission to transform the lives of students of every age and background across the state of Maine through access to high-quality distance and on-site education.”
The Elvins’ support has helped provide scholarships from the UMA 50th Anniversary Scholarship Fund for non-traditional learners. “Many times this funding will allow students who have exhausted all other sources of aid to complete their degrees,” the release said.
The Elvins have also given much to the community, including playing a role in the new Cony High School construction, Kennebec Valley YMCA, Lithgow Library addition, Kennebec River Rail Trail, Bond Brook Recreational Area, Waterville Opera House, KV Humane Society, Friends of Cobbossee Watershed, Thomas College, Kennebec Land Trust, Augusta Food Bank and the Kennebec Historical Society.
Elvin, who is president and co-founder of G&E Roofing in Augusta, was presented with the John Bridge Award from the Kennebec Valley YMCA in 2017 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce earlier this year.
