AUGUSTA — The ninth annual AIDS Walk of Central Maine will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Kennebec Valley YMCA, 31 Union St.
The walk is hosted by the Horizon Program of MaineGeneral Medical Center.
It is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the program, which provides quality, compassionate and comprehensive medical and social services to all identified people living with HIV/AIDS in central and mid-coast Maine.
With a clinic in Gardiner and offices in Augusta, the Horizon Program provides:
* A clinic for medical services and interaction with health care professionals; * Case management for people living with HIV/AIDS; * Educational programs and community outreach;
* Counseling and support for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
The fun-filled family event includes a picnic lunch, face-painting and more. This is a dog-friendly event (all pets must be leashed).
Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk starting at 10 a.m.
Incredible progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but a cure has not been found. Each year 50,000 new HIV/AIDS cases are diagnosed nationwide and we need to continue to raise awareness to prevent this disease.
Whether it is a friend, parent, child, relative or other loved one, many people are touched by HIV/AIDS. We walk to honor those who have died and support those who are living with this disease.
