LEWISTON — The importance of recycling was celebrated in Robin Desjardins’ third-grade class May 8 at Thomas J. McMahon School. Her students had participated in a recycling contest facilitated by the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council to raise recycling awareness among youth.
LYAC received numerous photos of students’ sculptures made from recyclable materials, and Mrs. Desjardins’ students submitted the stand-out submission. They constructed a large house from numerous recyclable materials resulting in walls, a kitchen, balcony, windows, doors, dog house, food, game room, tanks, flowers, and more! Mrs. Desjardins remarked how seriously they took the project as they learned about recycling.
Mayor Shane Bouchard and recycling advocate Councilor Joline Landry Beam were on hand for the celebration. Several students described the various aspects of the sculpture to the guests; one student said, “We gathered all our ideas and worked together.”
LYAC’s Hunter Steele tested the student’s recycling knowledge with true/false questions, and Beam shared information about Lewiston’s landfill, how important it is to re-use and recycle, and asked them questions about what they’d learned.
LYAC’s Emma Wolverton praised the students for a job well done, and LYAC provided them with a “Recycling Rocks” certificate and “Recycling Rulz” t-shirts, as well as hosting an ice cream social with the class, funded by the Lewiston Firefighters Association.
