AUGUSTA — The Viles Arboretum has joined forces with area farmers to create a market welcoming of the area’s immigrant community.
With support from Cultivating Communities, an organization founded in 2001 to create and sustain greater access to healthy local food, the arboretum connected with the immigrant community and established the new Beyond Borders farmers market.
The market’s trial opening will be from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, June 29. The grand opening will be July 6, with the same hours, continuing through the summer. The market will feature ethnic lunch items and a host of products including fresh vegetables, meat, goat dairy products and many other farm products.
Hot lunches will be served every Friday, beginning at noon, and will feature sambusas, an African delicacy with spiced meat wrapped in fried dough.
The farmers market benefits the Arboretum by bringing people from all around who have never been here before. With this introduction to the grounds, more and more people will discover this resource for hiking, learning about nature, viewing art and so much more, Viles officials said.
