LEWISTON — Museum L-A wants to hear from the community about what it wants to see its future new museum be as it honors the past, remembers the people and inspires the future, museum officials said.
A community forum will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, in the Gallery at Museum L-A, 35 Canal St., to give the public an opportunity to hear updates of the planning process and listen to their input for consideration in that process.
“We are ready to do lots of listening and need input from all ages, walks of life, ethnicities and future thinking,” said Kathy Becvar, director of development.
For years the museum worked to save the history of these vibrant communities. Started as a Museum of Textiles and the Industrial Revolution, but useum founders realized the concept needed to expand and became a Museum of Work and Community because telling the story of work was so intertwined with that of building community, it couldn’t be ignored. It was important to stay in a mill and the decision included staying in the downtown area.The new site at 1 Beech St. on the riverfront accomplishes that.
Museum staff asks participants to bring with their ultimate dreams of what they would like to see the museum be for people of all ages, families, students, visitors from afar and more.
“Tell us what you liked the most about museums you have visited, but please, go beyond that — we ask you to be the Jetson’s of the future for our new museum,” Becvar added.
Museum L-A is in the Bates Mill Complex, 35 Canal St.
