AUBURN — The Immigrant Resource Center of Maine celebrated its 15th year with Haweenka 2018, were it honored female activists from across the state.
The center’s programming supports refugees and immigrant communities across Maine through culturally and linguistically sensitive advocacy and services.
Haweenka 2018 took Tuesday, May 1, and included an international fashion show, dinner, musical entertainment, African crafts for sale, dessert and more. Keynote speaker was Rachel Talbot Ross, president of the Maine Portland Chapter of the NAACP.
Community Courage Awards were given to women and girls throughout the state who fight for social and racial justice.
Awardees included Sue Sharon of Lewiston, Holly Stover of Boothbay, Ross of Portland, Louis Reckitt of South Portland, 21st Century Girls of Lewiston (Amina Aden, Fardowsa Aden, Hodan Musse, Bisharo Odowa, Isho Mohammed, Fadimatou Katou), Qamar Bashir of Lewiston, Hamdia Ahmed of Portland, and Mahatsen Ounsa of Lewiston.
