SIDNEY — The Sidney Historical Society will host guest speaker Nancy Leompte of Ne-Do-Bam which means “friend” in Abenaki, who will explore fact and fiction surrounding local Abenaki woman Molly Ockett.
The meeting will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 8 at 2986 Middle Road.
Ockett lived from 1740 to 1816 and served as a doctor and midwife to many of the region’s early settlers. She was also the victim of culturally insensitive legends and the bigotry of reporters.
The talk is an opportunity to learn about her time and place in history, explore the culture of her people and listen to first-hand accounts of her life.
The event is free and open to the public.
The Ne-Do-Ba organization uses genealogical and historical research to show the Abenaki people are still in place, participated in history, helped build a regional identity, and contributed to the genetic make-up of the interior Northeast.
