LEWISTON — Brayden Bashaw, 12, of Auburn recently delivered a Brady Buggy fire engine filled with toys to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center as the culmination of a community service project.
The buggy accommodates an IV pole, which allows families to easily move young children around inpatient areas, along with their toys, stuffed animals and snacks.
The American Red Cross last month recognized Brayden as a Community Service Real Hero for his efforts.
“Prior to receiving this wonderful buggy, we had one wagon, which did not accommodate an IV pole,” said Barbara Childs, director of nursing at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. “Pulling the wagon along with an IV was cumbersome to say the least.”
She added, “Brayden is an amazing young man. His efforts are completely in line with our mission, and we’re grateful to him for this thoughtful gift.”
Brayde said that his parents helped him understand the value of giving back. “Being able to help other kids is special,: he said.
During the 2017 holiday season, Brayden raised approximately $7,500 by making and selling pine cone ornaments and collecting monetary donations from friends, family and local businesses. Brayden plans to expand his philanthropic efforts in 2018 in the hope of helping even more people.
